Trying to get the ratings up a little bit, you know, just a little bit. And if you're wondering where you heard this before, that's because you've been listening with me Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, and I greatly and I greatly appreciate your support.
More Than A Game
SPEAKER_00Now, more than a game, why does basketball matter? And to be fair, we could actually apply this to multiple sports, right? Like football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, right? You can say sports in general, but this is called get a bucket, right? So we're talking about basketball. Listen, ladies and gentlemen, end of day, right? Basketball gives us something to appreciate. Now, think about this for a second, okay? Somewhere today, somebody is playing basketball for the first time. Like some kid is walking into a gym and hearing the basketballs bounce on the flow. Whether it's hardwood, whether it's concrete, whatever the case may be, first timer. Somebody's hitting their first jumper, somebody's getting crossed up for the first time, ankle breakers, like someone's getting picked last or picked first. Hell, someone's getting picked, meaning gotten the ball stolen from them. Somebody making the varsity team, someone getting cut. You know what I'm saying? Someone getting a scholarship, someone's getting an NIL deal. Like somewhere, millions of people are sitting down watching basketball without ever touching the court. Some people realize just how fun the game is and they touch the court. That's what makes this game special, ladies and gentlemen. There are so many different ways to experience basketball. You can play it, you can coach it, watch it, study it, talk about it, referee it, write about it, create content about it. It's simply phenomenal. Like you can be the person sitting next to someone asking, why did that why did they just take that
Basketball Creates Instant Connection
SPEAKER_00shot? And suddenly you got 20 minutes of conversation. That's basketball. Now, like I said, the game creates conversations, ladies and gentlemen. Like sports is one of the greatest conversation starters we actually have. Think about this. You just can go up to somebody random and say, You see that game last night? That's it. That's all it takes. Strangers can disagree about an athlete and suddenly have something to talk about for the next hour. Like somebody could be wearing a Lakers jersey through an airport or a commissary or grocery store, anything to the mall, anywhere. And another person can say, man, them Celtics are better. Like, you got instant interaction. You got instant camaraderie. Basketball crosses age groups, neighborhoods, income levels, countries. It's supposed to bridge a gap in communities, right? And that's kind of important. Hell, you don't even need to speak too many different languages to understand that somebody wants to play basketball. Just point that you see someone looking at the basketball, looking at the court, maybe do practicing their form. Clearly, they're interested. So, like, you don't even I don't need to know someone from Japan wants to play basketball because if they have a basketball in their hand, they probably want to play. Like, it's gonna help create arguments. Like, ladies and gentlemen, if y'all don't know a basketball fan that loves arguing, to some degree, after a while it gets a little annoying, but to some degree, it gets annoying, and that's still a conversation. And keep in mind, in real life, too, you have disagreements, but that disagreement can help create connections. Like, I know people who I disagree with all the time, and like that those disagreements are part of the reason why we still talk. It really is.
Life Lessons Hidden In Possessions
SPEAKER_00Like, basketball is a microcosm of life, ladies and gentlemen. Like, this might be the biggest reason why I appreciate the game, actually. Basketball teaches life lessons without announcing that it's teaching you anything. Think about what happens in one game, right? You gotta prepare, you gotta execute. We're human, we make mistakes. We always gotta adjust, you gotta communicate, you gotta deal with different personalities or the same as your personality. You gotta deal with pressure, no pressure makes diamonds. You gotta be able to succeed, achieve, right? Shout out to noops, you gotta be able to fail. You get another opportunity, too, by the way. Like that's life, but that's also basketball. Like you play amazing in the first quarter and still lose the game, or you have a terrible first half and completely turn things around in the second half. Does that sound familiar? Like in life, does that sound familiar? There are times, ladies and gentlemen, where in life everything seems to be going right. Then next you know, it smacks you across the face. That happens. What are you gonna do on defense? You turn the ball over. Okay, you missed the shot. What happens next? Are you running back? You got embarrassed. We understand that. Are you gonna just stop playing? Or are you going to line up for the next possession? Like, ladies and gentlemen, it's it's not j it's it's not just a game, but it is a game, right? Like basketball helps teach us standards. One thing about like one thing basketball can teach very quickly is that standards do matter. Think about it, right? Everybody wants to win, everybody wants to get their point across, everybody wants to argue, debate. Sports debates are a very common thing, but standards get overlooked a good amount of times. So again, basketball has taught me that standards do matter. Think about this the GOAT discussion, right? What's your definition of greatest of all time? What's your definition of all time? Because I think when people say greatest of all time, they're thinking about solely the NBA. But maybe your definition encompasses all of basketball. So we play high school, college, and like professionally. I say professionally, because not everyone makes the NBA. You know what I'm saying? Like basketball teaches standards. We teach that well, you know, habits matter too. Talent matters, of course, but habits definitely matter. Are you showing up on time? Are you listening? Again, are you communicating? Are you helping your teammates by being a good teammate? Are you doing what you're supposed to do when no one's watching? That's a big one. Are you willing to make the extra pass, even when you know you could have taken the shot? Selflessness. Basketball forces teams to establish standards. And that's something every organization, every workplace, every relationship eventually has to do. What are you willing to accept? What are you like what's expected, right? What are we trying to become? Goal-oriented individuals. This this is this is right here for you. It's even there for folks who are not goal-oriented, by the way. Again, you gotta have standards that support your goals. That's a life lesson. And and keep in mind, too, ladies and gentlemen, basketball is important because people have played it or watched it. And again, that feeds to the conversations. There's definitely something valuable with appreciation both sides of basketball. Like playing it gives you one perspective, and watching it gives you another, too. As an athlete, you might be too into the weeds, and as an analyst, you might not be in the weeds enough. So it's always nice, at least outside of looking in, to seeing people converse from different backgrounds, right? Like when you play the game, even recreationally, you start appreciating certain things differently. Like you understand how exhausting defense can be, or how difficult it is to make the right decision when someone's pressuring you. How about just making a wide open shot? Because it's easy, and you would think, oh, you're supposed to make that, but them them jokes be a little tough too. Like I personally state that layups can be tricky, like they genuinely can, but everyone talks about layups like oh, there's there's some easy thing to do. It's not that easy. Like it can be easy in moments, but sometimes, even in them easy moments, it gets a little tricky. So, again, I'd appreciate when people talk about basketball. I might be frustrated with some of y'all, like some of y'all who just talk solely about stats. You got to bring up stats, but solely about stats, and on top of that, you focusing on like two key stats too. That's a problem. But even still in hindsight, I can appreciate the conversation. Again, basketball also teaches you about people, like it helps reveal personalities, not perfectly, but you can learn a few things, like how someone responds when they're losing. How do they treat teammates who aren't talented? How do they react when a coach takes them out? How do they handle winning? Or how do they handle losing? Because again, certain things are brought out of us when we win or lose. There's a there's a there's a term called poor sport. You know what I'm saying? Like you can't do that in basketball. At least you shouldn't do that. Do you celebrate yourself or do you celebrate everybody? Do you respect the opponent after you beat them? Like, competition. How do you handle competition? It don't always have to require hatred, but how do you handle? Do you falter when it when competition arises? Do you take on the challenge? Like, you can believe you, Michael Jordan. Everyone wants to be like Mike. You might even believe that Mike is the GOAT, right? You can still appreciate LeBron James. I I think Braun, like I think Mike is the GOAT. After that, it's Kobe and then Timmy. But I still appreciate Braun's game, even though I have talked about him negatively a couple times. It's not about him the man, it's about him the athlete, ladies and gentlemen. You can love Kobe Bryant and respect Tim Duncan or Shaq. Like you can be an NBA fan and appreciate the WNBA. Like you can appreciate men and women's college basketball, ladies and gentlemen. Like these are things that you can do. So again, we need to make sure that we appreciate basketball while we
Appreciate The Game While You Can
SPEAKER_00have it. Because realistically, right, that may be the biggest message of today's episode, actually. Appreciate the game while you have it. Players retire, gyms close, right? Teams change. Your knees don't always feel the same forever, trust me. You know what I'm saying? Like it gets a little tricky out here. And I'm still in my 30s, too, by the way. So I still got a little nitroglycerin left in the tank. But I also feel a little bit different, too. I see some differences. Like your teammates that you've played with for 10 years eventually stop showing up. Or maybe they get families and they got different or better or higher priorities nowadays. So you got to make sure that you enjoy basketball. Enjoy watching Steph Curry play. Enjoy watching LeBron James play. Enjoy watching Asia Wilson and Brianna Stewart play. Enjoy watching all these wonderful athletes play. You can still critique them for sure. Like I'm still going to critique players. Don't get me wrong. But ladies and gentlemen, you can still appreciate these athletes while they're playing. You have to. Because if you're fortunate enough, you're witnessing, you may witness a little greatness. And you don't want to overlook that. You want to give people their flowers before they're gone too. So again, I just want to make sure that you're appreciating the game of basketball while we have it. Because who knows? Maybe two years from now, the game of basketball starts to get a little boring. And people stop wanting to play it and watch it. Who knows? You got to appreciate it when you can't, when you have it. So again, ladies and gentlemen, just to kind of wrap this up, right? That's why basketball matters to me. It's not just championships or stats. It's definitely not who's numbers, like who's number one on someone's all-time ranking. Yes, those are fun conversations to have, but I mean, basketball gives us more than just that to talk about. It gives us something to study, it gives us something to compete in, to teach, to watch, to share, to lean on to. You may have a bad, I had a bad day where I had a friend pass away and I went to go hoop, and that helped me clear up a lot of space, ladies and gentlemen. A lot of emotions. Like the the basketball court is a small fit space. But inside them 90 feet, 94 feet, I mean, I'm sorry, you can find a bunch of things like teamwork, leadership, accountability, sacrifice, failure, confidence, adversity, communication, discipline. That's a good one. I like discipline, joy, even community. Like basically, life. And that's the thing about basketball. So the next time that you're actually watching a game, getting mad because somebody missed a free throw or arguing about somebody's legacy, or even complaining about a referee making a terrible call. You gotta remember and appreciate the fact that this game has probably given you more than you realize. So don't take it too far. You gotta remember who you watched it with, who you played the game with, the conversations, the moments, a lot of these things you need to make sure that you treasure. Because the game's not forever. You playing the game is not forever. So you gotta appreciate it. And that's why I appreciate basketball, ladies and gentlemen. You can say this is sports as well, too, but I'm a basketball fan, I'm a basketball
Final Thoughts And Listener Question
