Welcome And Today’s Topic
SPEAKER_00What's up everybody? It's your favorite show. It's favorite show Get a Bucket. I'm your host, Trey, as usual. Hope you're all having a wonderful, wonderful day. Today we're gonna talk about the WNBA 2026 Commissioner Cup. But before we do that, please make sure to hit that like and subscribe button. Comment tell anyone who's anyone about the show. I'm trying to get the ratings up a little bit, you know, just a little bit. And if you wonder where you've heard this before, that's because you've been listening to me Monday through Friday at 11 o'clock a.m. Eastern Standard Time. So I greatly appreciate you.
Commissioner’s Cup Explained Simply
SPEAKER_00Now, the WNBA Commissioner Cup. What is that? It's an in-season tournament that introduces the different players. And it's able to highlight potential new rivalries, get teams to battle against one another. It's a good time to actually watch. I'm not gonna lie to you. You got conference games, right? Eastern and Western. And long story short, the teams are playing against their conference competition. And the team with the best record in both the East and the West, amongst the East and the Western teams, get to face off in the championship game. You may be wondering about things like a tiebreaker, right? Like what happens if the records are the same? Who advances? Well, they base that on the head-to-head matchup, the head-to-head record, and the point and differential.
Prize Money And Real Stakes
SPEAKER_00Now you may be wondering, well, what are they playing for? What's the prize? Well, the prize is a trophy, bragging rights, and a $500, $500,000 pot that's split amongst the team. Now, personally, when I'm thinking about the end season tournament for the NBA, I don't think it really has no daggone weight to it. But this Commissioner Cup champ, well, this yeah, this Commissioner Cup championship, it may have some meat to it. It may, it may. And the reason why I say that, like, does the actual, does the WNBA Commissioner Cup really matter? And it started back in 2021, keep
Past Winners And What It Predicts
SPEAKER_00in mind, right? Every team, with the exception of one, which even that team could have happened, has made it at least to the semifinals. At least. Again, I said this started in 2021. So in 2021, the Seattle Storm did play the Connecticut Sun and they beat them in the Commissioner Cup game. Now, the Sc the Chicago Sky and the Phoenix Mercury were the teams that, you know, advanced to the 2021 season. But the Sun, they lost to the Sky in the semis, and the Storm. They ended up losing to the Mercury, the team that got to the, you know what I'm saying, the championship game. And it was only like a they only got to play one game. Remember, they they they changed the playoff format. So if the sky had, I'm sorry, if the storm had to play against the Mercury in three games instead of one, that could have been interesting. Also, Brandon Stewart did not play. And I want to say that was Diana Tarossi's last game, last season, was it? I gotta double check that. But it was close. It was close to it, ladies and gentlemen. Now, 2022, the Aces end up beating the Chicago Sky in the Commissioner Cup Championship. The Aces ended up beating the Sun in the championship game. To be clear though, the Chicago Sky did get to the semifinals and they lost 2-3 against the Connecticut Sun. And that's in the semis. So again, they were very close to meeting in the finals. The next two seasons, each team that made it to the Commissioner Cup champ, they went on to go to the finals. We had Liberty beating the Aces in 2023. The Aces ended up beating Liberty for the title that same season. Then we had in 2024 the Leaks, the Lynx ended up beating the New York Liberty. They both ran it back, and the Liberty ended up beating the Lynx for a title. So it sounds like this thing does matter some. Like I said, the only team that did not make it to the semis, the second round, was the Seattle Storm. And if we had it in today's game format for playoffs, and especially if Stewie were playing, I think they might have, in fact, gotten honestly possibly to the championship game, if I'm being honest with you. Now, 2025, that one was an interesting one, right? Because the fever ended up battling the Lynx. Last season, I thought, I know a lot of people were thinking that the fever were going to go to the championship game. I personally didn't think so. They had the talent, sure, but I didn't think they were gonna get there. The fever went to the semis. And so did the Lynx. They both lost, but they both went. And keep in mind, hell, the fever actually played the Aces the best in the playoffs. They went five games. It didn't go five games between the Aces and Mercury in the championship game. Aces actually swept the Mercury. So
2026 Standings And New Teams
SPEAKER_00I'm just saying, ladies and gentlemen, when we're talking about the WNBA Commissioner Cup games, these really do matter. And I'm gonna be paying attention to it because, again, right now in the standings, ladies and gentlemen, if we were to pull up the standings, we have the Minnesota Lynx at number one, the Atlanta Dream at number two, the Dallas Wings at number three, the Aces at number four, the Val, Golden State Valkyrie's at number five, the Portland Fire at number six, the Toronto Tempo at number seven, and the New York Liberty at number eight. So if the season were to end today, this is what this is what the playoffs would look like. Yeah, it's yeah, it's kind of crazy when you look at it. Because you got here the two new teams in here. Actually, all the three new teams are in here. That's really disgusting work when you look at it. That's really crazy. That's like that that's that's so crazy, bro. What if the new teams just sit there and replace some of these? That's another discussion for another day. But that's what the standings are looking like. Now, if we go to the conferences, we're gonna see the dream versus the tempo versus the liberty versus the fever versus the mystics versus the sky versus the sun. And on the Western side, we're gonna see the Lynx versus the wings versus the aces versus the Valkyries versus the fire versus the sparks versus the storm versus the Mercury. These are gonna be some good games to watch. These oh my gosh, these are gonna be some good games to watch. I'm telling you that right now. And with game ones dropping off between the storm and the wings, and then we got the links and the and the Mercury. I'm gonna tell you right now, yeah, I'm gonna I'm probably gonna pay more attention to the wings and storm game, because the Lynx should be able to win that game. But ladies and gentlemen, I'm looking
Best Upcoming Games To Watch
SPEAKER_00forward to seeing who eventually matches up in the championship game. Because we at least know that those teams are gonna have a good chance of going up in the semis, not together per se, not battling each other, but they have a good chance at actually playing against other teams in the semis, reaching the semis, and then potentially meeting up in the championship game. Because as of right now, each team really has not matched up with the other in the first round or the semis. So that's actually fun to note. We may see them in the championship game. And what's this what is this doing?
Rivalries And Star Matchups Brewing
SPEAKER_00It's starting to breed some rivalries, if you will, right? Like we might see some rivalries start to form, especially if teams go back to back and they're and they're battling in the Commissioner Cup games as well as the championship games consistently. I think we can talk about rivalries forming up. And not just like the aces versus the Liberty. I'm talking about some of these young teams too. Like, what if we see the wings versus the fever, Caitlin Clark and Paige Beckers ushering in a new era of women's basketball? I'd love to see that personally. I think a lot of people would actually love to see that because a lot of people are starting to question and wonder who's better between Paige Beckers and Caitlin Clark. I personally think Paige Becker's both a good player. Put them on a championship-esque pedigree. And let's see what happens. Or you can get the links back there, have Olivia Miles do something saucy, especially with Nafisa Collier being hampered. I'd love to see how that team gels and thrives. I really would. So again, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I'm looking forward to seeing the Commissioner Cup games, which do start today, June 1st. Looking forward to it. But I'm curious, who are you all outside of your own personal teams? Who are you all rooting for? Like if my like I ain't gonna lie to y'all, man. If my sparks get to this Commissioner Cup
Who I’m Rooting For
SPEAKER_00game, I'm gonna be really excited because that's telling me that we should at least get to the to the playoffs. Which right now I didn't mention us in the playoffs. I also didn't mention the fever either, to be clear, nor the Mystics, and I expect, and even the Mercury, and I expect at least three of those teams to get to the playoffs. So hopefully somebody drop, because it's still early. It's still early, but I'm looking forward to seeing who all advances. But y'all kind of heard my bias pick on who I want to get to the games personally. I would love to see Wings versus Fever, but then I'd also like to see my sparks get there if possible. Fingers
Your Predictions And Final CTA
SPEAKER_00crossed. But ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, that does conclude the end of the episode. So, like I said, please let me know your thoughts. Who do you all expect to be there? Are you gonna be disappointed if a team does not get to the semis or championship game of the playoffs if they get to the WNBA Commissioner Cup championship game? I want to know your thoughts. But that does conclude the end of the episode. So please make sure to like, subscribe, comment, tell anyone who's anyone one about the WNBA and two about my show. My name is Trey, I'm the host of Get the Bucket. I hope you're all having a good one. Take care.
