Welcome And Why March Matters

SPEAKER_00

What's up, everybody? It's your favorite show's favorite show Get a Bucket. I'm your host, Trey, as usual. Hope you're all having a wonderful, wonderful day. Now, today we're gonna talk about March Madness. You know what I'm saying? It's been a little active, but hear me out though, because we also gonna talk about just college basketball in general and why March is such a wonderful time. Now, it's a little hectic, okay? You got a lot of teams who are gonna be really excited. And you got a lot of teams who are gonna be really down. Let's start off with some of the teams that might have been down. I'm gonna use these four teams as examples. We got George Mason University, Duke University, UNC, and VCU. Now keep in mind, actually, when I think about it, George Mason and VCU are rivals, and then Duke and UNC are rivals. And they're all connected just this season. Let's talk about it. So as a GMU fan, that's right, that's my alma mater, I was watching us in the 8-10 game. And the crazy thing is, George Mason's up 10 points at the half. You thinking that we're playing real well? I think we went up by even as much as 14. Like it looked like we had the game in luck. That second half, oh, St. Bonaventure put belt to tail. Like we did not look, yeah, we didn't look good in the second half. And that is so infuriating as a fan to watch because you just saw your team dominate for an entire half. How is it that they lose the grip that they had? It's very, it's very heartbreaking. And I understand why a lot of people, a lot of fans, even a lot of, like a lot of the players, you gotta feel bad. Like it's gotta be a shell shock. When you get punched in the mouth like that after you just whoop day tail for a whole half, it's gotta be confusing. And it's not even the fact that some of y'all probably don't even know who George Mason is. Unless you're real basketball fans, y'all don't know that we went to the Final Four in 2006. We were ranked in the top 25, 2010. We got a little bit of cachet. Hell, even just this season, it looked like we could have been ranked because we were getting honorable mentions for the top 25. Because we had that good of a record. It was like 19-2. And then the last nine games of the season, we go three and six. And it's crazy because we only play in the A-10 tournament one game. Then we go to the NIT tournament and lose that one. It was very heartbreaking. But again, we had the lead in the A-10 tournament, and I thought we would at least go to game two, maybe even game three. Losing game one the way we did, it hurts. But it's not just because George Mason. Again, I said they were almost ranked. We didn't get ranked. It's okay. I understand that. But let's let's focus on the team that is ranked real quick. Because you might just think, well, that's what happens with an unranked team, right? How about my Blue Devils? My Duke Blue Devils, who are number one in the nation. Not their conference, not their state, not in my heart. In the nation. We have been battle tested time and time again. We have not had too many large deficits this entire season. And we've played some good teams. We've played Michigan. Like, ladies and gentlemen, we played the number one team in the country at one point in time. We've played against Kansas, Florida, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas Tech, Louisville, SMU, UNC, Clemson. Like we've UVA. We've played so many ranked teams. So for us to be down by 11 at the half, and keep in mind too, it wasn't just the half, because like, respectfully, that 16-seed Sienna looked like they shouldn't have been a 16-seed. They really didn't play with any bench players. Their starters basically played the whole daggone game. They only put in one sub at the end of the game, and that was to foul. Crazy work. But we had to really put in our like strap on our bootstraps and get the job done. Ladies and gentlemen, we've seen two number one seeds lose to a 16 seed before: UVA and Purdue. And I was going to be infuriated if we, Duke, were the first Blue Bloods to be a one seed and lose. Like, how does that happen? We already had, like, Sienna gave us our largest deficit, which was 13 for the whole season. And again, I told you what we played ranked teams. We should have put belt to tail a lot earlier. But here's the thing. When you're playing these lower seed teams, you might think things are going to be a cakewalk. It ain't. Because they're trying to play to keep their season live, just like you are, just like the higher seeds are. Yes, we battle against the ACC top talent. Yes, we've had a tough road. We've been battle tested. Shouldn't have taken this as a cakewalk. Again, ladies and gentlemen, this is March madness. This is what this time of year breeds. Madness. Hence why it's called March Madness. The number one seed, almost losing. George Mason going up 10, 14 points, losing in the second half in a tragic fashion. You can either have high expectations or be optimistic. And it doesn't matter. Because if your team loses, you're still gonna be hurt. If your team wins, you still gonna be excited. Now again, my team Duke, we we beat Sienna 71-65. I gotta say this right now. I'm okay with the win because Sienna played their hearts out. Like tip of the cap to Sienna. They did not look like a 16 seed, okay? Even still, we should have dominated a lot better than how we did. So I'm proud of some of these boys up here. Like it's good that they showed up. But against better competition, against stiffer competition, we can't have that same first half. We need to have the second half the way we played. We won 39 to 22 in the second half. The first half, we lost 43 to 32. So again, we we we scored a little bit more, but our defense is what really stood out in that second half. So you got to get back to what you were doing in the regular season, ladies and gentlemen. Because it helped you out. Like we were number one, we were in the top five, both offense and defense, Duke meaning. George Mason. I don't know what happened to y'all over the last nine games. That's gonna be, I gotta do a deep dive. Because I was there, I was watching, and I was still kind of confused. Very confused. But during the regular season, ladies and gentlemen, you get to see what these teams are about. So come March Madness time. You get a little more frustrated if players don't play the way they've been playing. But again, let's keep in mind it's March Madness. Now, VCU, they played UNC, and I gotta say this, right? I'm not talking trash. I'm just stating pure facts. I'm so happy that VCU beat UNC. Oh my gosh. Because listen, VCU has beaten Duke before in the first round. I need Lehigh to beat UNC now just so that Duke fans can feel better. I'm just being honest. I'm just calling a spade a spade. But hear me out though. UNC losing the way they did, they went up by as much as 18, 19 points. Like it was, it's crazy work to see that VCU ends up winning. In the first half, UNC wins that first half, 39 to 28. Again, in the second half, they go up by as much as I want to say 14, no, no, 15 points, nine minutes left. 15 points, nine minutes left. 11 points with four five minutes left. And your UNC, you can't get the job done. I understand Caleb is out. Alright, that's their best player. Even still, I was expecting a little bit more out of UNC. Because again, not because of the team, not because of the program, slightly maybe because of the program, but again, I've seen VCU beat Duke. So maybe one of these boys from VCU might go to the league. Maybe. Maybe. But here's the thing, here's the thing that trips me out the most. It's the fact that y'all that y'all lose the game after being up so much. Remember, they beat my Blue Devils after we were up 12-13 points with a couple minutes left in the hat in the second half. I still don't like how that game went. And again, yes, different team, because Caleb was not there. But I think as a UNC program, you gotta have tougher skin. You gotta have a better mental fortitude to keep this game going. You got Seth Trimble hooping, a senior, Henry Vessar playing good ball, 26 points in the game. He was hooping. But if you let a team come back, you might end up losing that game because they hitting you in the mouth just after you just whooped a tail. Now they're coming back and now dogging you. This reminds me of like some some superhero stuff. Like Dragon Ball Z. I done seen Goku get his tail beat quite a few times. And then come back and win. Yes, the help of his teammates. But that's what basketball is. You need your teammates. So again, UNC, while we tip our cap to VCU, one for winning the game. Thank y'all. Okay. As a George Mason alum, it feels a little weird to tell VCU thank you. But you beat my real rival, which is UNC, so I appreciate you. But on the flip side, UNC. Y'all were the better team, to be clear. Like on paper, you all were the better team. I was just telling one of my homeboys, I expect UNC to win. Why? Because I saw VCU lose to George Mason during the regular season. Now keep in mind, regular season only matters but so much. Because let's remember, too, ladies and gentlemen, my George Mason Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams. And I'm talking about putt belt to tail. Ladies and gentlemen, I went to that game personally.

Hot Seat Talk And March Emotions

Listener Question And Closing CTA

SPEAKER_00

Louis was ranked number 25 in the country, and we went 86 to 57. Now, if you want to, if you want to wonder what St. Louis is doing right now, well, they just beat the breaks off Georgia 102 to 77. I'm just saying, and they get to play Michigan next. St. Louis has done a spec look, they have done a spectacular job this season, okay? But George Mason beat the tail. So obviously, anybody can lose. Obviously. But the fact that you lose the way you did is a little troubling. So I know people might be talking about coaches on hot seats. I don't know if Huber Davis from UNC is on the hot seat. Okay? I don't. Could he be? Again, after the way you lose, I hear it. I can understand that. I just don't know. How about Tony Skin from George Mason? Because again, we started out real well, ended terribly. Could he be on the hot seat? That's a little bit tough. Now, I understand more if you talk about Tony Skin, although he's a newer coach. Hubert Davis, he's been to the Final Four, and they lost their best player. So you might get some fans talking about, oh, fire the coaches. That's what breeds. That's some of the results from March. That's what March breeds sometimes. A little animosity, a little anger, a little resentment. Hell, I was thinking about firing John Shire. Ain't no way in the world we're supposed to lose to Seattle, bro. Ain't no way in the world. I don't care that we lost Caleb Foster. I don't care that we don't have Patrick Ngomba. They matter for sure. And I would love to have him back. We don't lose to Seattle. Not a 16th seed, and we're the one seed. That does not happen. Hopefully that's a wake-up call. But again, ladies and gentlemen, there's so many ways to look at March Madness. Whether you are angry, you're happy, whether you're trying to be optimistic, whether you're trying to prepare yourself for the next game because you want to make sure that your team has a wake-up call. March Madness, it breeds a lot of emotions. And I had to use these four teams to highlight that because they all matter to me. Duke and UNC, they've mattered to me for decades. George Mason and VCU, they've mattered to me for now a decade plus. So again, ladies and gentlemen, be happy that Marsh Madness is here. There's a lot of emotions going. A lot of things happening. A lot of upsets to take place. I just hope that my Blue Devils can make it out far. Dag, day one, game one, it was crazy. I had a couple people already texting me saying, What's wrong with your boys? I gotta put my my phone on Do Not Disturb. Cause hey, I'm not trying to hear nothing about my Blue Devils losing. I can't, I can't. But ladies and gentlemen, I'm curious what your thoughts are thus far of March Madness. It's been mad, it's been it's been a lot of madness going on. Will it get even madder? We'll find out. But ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, that does conclude the end of this episode. So please make sure to like, subscribe, comment, tell anyone who's anyone about the show. My name is Trey. I'm the host of Get of Bucket. Hope you are all having a good one. Take care.
