Steph Curry makes history becoming the first active player in a major US sport to take on a college administrative role as Assistant General Manager for his alma mater, Davidson University. This groundbreaking move could potentially start a trend for other professional athletes looking to expand their careers beyond playing.

• Curry will manage player recruitment, contract management, budget oversight, NCAA compliance, and team strategy
• Assistant GM position typically pays around $178,000 annually, raising questions about how Curry will handle compensation
• NBA players could have the skills necessary for administrative roles despite their demanding playing schedules
• Star power and name recognition create significant advantages in recruiting top talent to college programs
• Parallels exist to other former players like Penny Hardaway who successfully leveraged their reputation in college basketball
• This new career path could create both opportunities and pressure for existing college basketball administrators
• The basketball world will be watching to see if this experiment proves successful and sustainable

What's up everybody. It's your favorite show's favorite show Get a Bucket. I'm your host, trey, and as usual, I hope you're all having a wonderful, wonderful day today. Today we got to talk about Steph Curry, because you know what Buddy really said. Hey, I'm tired of y'all always talking about Braun. Right, he's not the only one that can be a GM. That's why he became an assistant general manager for Davidson University. It is insane to think about, right, when you're thinking about Steph Curry Chef Curry with the shot, multiple time MVP, multiple time champion, regarded as the greatest point guard of all times in some folks' eyes, greatest shooter in everybody's eyes he said he wanted to be an assistant GM for his alma mater in Davidson University. Star player for the Warriors, assistant GM, first active player in US major sports to take on the college admin role.

Speaker 1:

Ladies and gentlemen, this is actually going to be a little controversial. I can't hold y'all. This caught my eye right, and the reason why it did was for a multitude of reasons. One I'm curious if he getting the same level of paper, because I mean it ain't like Buddy really is a GM. Right, we understand, he got basketball pedigree, but like a gm I don't know if he really a gm, but then again, though, again, we did call braun lay gm, so maybe he does have a little bit experience, because they did sign kevin durant and some people right. So I mean he he might know a few things about forming up a good squad. And let's actually read off what an assistant GM is.

Speaker 1:

An assistant GM is an assistant college basketball general manager which is primarily, or who primarily, supports the head basketball GM in all aspects of team operations, including player recruitment, contract management, budget oversight, compliance with NCAA regulations, scheduling, game day logistics, community engagement and overall team strategy, while often focusing on specific areas like player development, scouting or administrative tasks, depending on the program's needs. So that's a little. That's a little. That's a little task, right, a little, that's a little task. Right there, that's a little task. Uh, I'm trying to figure out. All right, let's see here player recruitment.

Speaker 1:

I think steph can help out with that, right? Hey, what's good? Young fella, you know? Yeah, steph, you know you should probably come on, davidson, we can rock with you real quick. Get you some nice little underarmor gear. Get you some free steph curry. All right, I hear that too. You know he can work with that in all aspects of team operations.

Speaker 1:

Where does that end? Like if, if, if the GM say, hey, I need some some paperwork done, steph handle, handle my light work. Like that was Steph going to be doing? Like I'm trying to figure that out. Contract management again paperwork what are we talking about here, ladies and gentlemen? Budget oversight is Steph really going to be calculating numbers? All right, like so, so susie's, susie's contract, is that okay? Well, we still got bills over here. Like I don't know if steph's really going to be acting like that, ladies and gentlemen. So again, I'm curious how steph curry is going to be as an assistant gm.

Speaker 1:

Also, you know, is Steph just going to be able to do this because he's elite? Like, could he do all these job? Could he do everything in the job description that's listed off? He might be able to. I'm pretty sure he seems like a smart guy, right, but keep in mind Buddy is a basketball player for the Warriors. Like quite a huge deal, will he have the bandwidth and he could hire somebody to help him fulfill these tasks? Quite a huge deal. Will he have the bandwidth and he could hire somebody to help him fulfill these tasks? Or maybe he just knows how to get the job done himself and that's why I say, is he just that elite? But because he's also this elite, does he have the resources to get the job done? That's what I'll be curious to pay attention to. But again, steph Curry as an assistant GM, that is interesting.

Speaker 1:

Also, we have other active NBA players, so will this start a trend For other players to try to be assistant GMs? This could, this could start an avenue for players to have a career outside of basketball. Like, imagine Boogie Cousins being someone's assistant GM. That would be pretty entertaining. I'm not going to lie to you, that would be pretty cool. But again, keep in mind, when we think about college, kentucky did pretty well. Yeah, he was part of the one and done crew.

Speaker 1:

But again, I'm pretty sure that there's something amongst that one and done team that you can repeat and try to implement in other teams. Like, there's other players that could potentially become assistant GMs. And again, when I read off the job description help out with recruiting, contract management, ladies and gentlemen, I'm here to tell you you can learn that on the job. There's on the job training for that, budget oversight, same thing, compliance with NCAA regulations that's detail oriented stuff. But again, when you're learning a playbook. That's detail oriented stuff as well too. So I think some of these players are actually able, capable Of becoming assistant GMs. So shout out to Steph Curry for starting this trend potentially.

Speaker 1:

Let's also keep in mind too, ladies and gentlemen, that, like assistant GMs for college, y'all might have some pressure on you Because, again, let's say, steph Curry does a phenomenal job at his job, right as assistant GM not the Warriors assistant GM Might be a bad look for you. You can say, oh well, steph Curry gets a whole bunch of recruitment help because he's Steph Curry, he's blah blah, blah, blah, blah. You can make that excuse and that is a fair way to look at it. But what happens if there's a wave of other colleges that say, hey, let's try out our luck too and see if this player can help out with recruitment? We saw how Penny Hardaway, who didn't really have but so much coaching experience, bring in talent, just saying it is possible. So I'm curious from that perspective, how will assistant GMs be moving? And I did have a friend who, keep in mind, is in the school realm and he based on what he was telling me.

Speaker 1:

I'm not going to shed too much light on what was said, but I did get the gist that it the job is doable. It does seem doable for Steph and I'm assuming it can be doable for athletes as well too. And keep in mind, in NBA 2K there's this mode where it's called GM. It's the GM feature right, which allows you to do what we're talking about, and that was a fun aspect of the game for me. And again, we're talking about a video game, but still that's somewhat training. You have to deal with budgets, not dealing with contracts management per se, but to a degree you have to deal with some sort of contracts. It's possible that they can transition into assistant GMs.

Speaker 1:

So again, ladies and gentlemen, steph Curry being an assistant GM. This raised my eyebrows and I hope it raises y'all's as well. But I would love to hear what you all think in the comment section below. Do y'all think Steph's going to do a good job at being an assistant GM? Will he replace the GM at some point in time? And keep in mind, two assistant GMs make $178,000. So that's pretty good money. I am curious what happens with that money too for Steph, he don't need it, but again, he's doing the job, so maybe he might hire somebody to help him do his job. That could be an avenue as well.

Speaker 1:

But again, ladies and gentlemen, I'm definitely curious, your thoughts. Also, what do y'all think about the current assistant GMs? Will there be pressure on them, assistant GMs, will there be pressure on them? And then will NBA players start to actually become assistant GMs themselves? Maybe we can see these players go from college assistant GMs to GMs, to NBA assistant GMs to GMs. That would be interesting. But again, I'm curious about your thoughts. So please like, subscribe, comment, tell anyone who's anyone about the show. My name is Trey. I'm the host of Get a Bucket. Hope you all are having a good one. Take care.
